Биография группы1991
It all starts in Pudasjärvi, a small town of 10 000 inhibitants in Northern Finland, quite close to Oulu, the Northern city of technology. Autumn has come, and two boys are finally starting up a band of their own. Some Finnish underground metal bands have finally gained some success abroad, so Jarmo Puolakanaho and Altti Veteläinen decide to try it, too. Songs are written throughout the winter. Andromeda is finally chosen to be the name of the band. Jarmo plays the guitar and sings, Altti plays the second guitar. The drums are banged by the computer.
1992
The first demo is to be called "The Fourth Dimension". The recording sessions start in April and end in May. The tape contains four songs of power / thrash metal, not played so well. But you have to start somewhere, haven't you? The next demo is recorded in July, at the "official" rehearsal place of the bands of the town this time. The recording sessions are soon to be interrupted due to technical problems, however. So, the boys get an idea to expand the band to a "real band" with rehearsals and a real drummer. In August, Andromeda asks Petri Sankala (later to play in EToS) to their drummer. The also gets two more members Mikko Komulainen (vocals) and Olli-Pekka Törrö (guitar). Altti starts to play the bass. This line-up rehearses intensively until October. One night, the rehearsal place catches fire and burns down. The equipment is saved by the firemen but all the bands of the town suddenly lose their beloved small, cozy rehearsal place.
1993
New songs are written in spite of the lack of rehearsal place. Jarmo records an instrumental demo in summer in order to arrange time and space for brand new material and a brand new style. Autumn comes and still no rehearsal place... Altti, Jarmo and Olli decide to return back to the drum machine time - they form up a side project called MCD. The style would be a bit more deathmetallish. The demo tape "Beyond The Fantasy" is recorded and mixed in October - the result is much better than the boys expected.
1994
New demo tape (or actually promo tape) is being planned. The name comes first: "The Seventh Goddesses of Frost". The songs are recorded in May and the result is better than ever, even if the mixing doesn't get as good as it can. There is one problem. the name... Moshington D.C. doesn't sound such a serious name. So the band make up a new name: Eternal Tears of Sorrow. The boys think the tape is good enough to spread to the underground circles. The feedback is very encouraging.
Tico Tico studio has a very good reputation. EToS thinks the next demo must be recorded in a real studio, so Tico is the only solution. In October, "Bard's Burial" promo tape is recorded. It sounds better than anything before..
1995
The new promo tape gets spread around the world while Altti and Jarmo enter the army. Olli follows them in July. For the very first time, the band gets their music on cd as Utopian Vision Music from Canada and Shiver Records from Belgium as the band to have music on their forthcoming compilation cd's. Altti and Jarmo get out of the army in December, Olli must wait until March.
1996
In early 1999 the band gets surprised: a new record label, called X-Treme Records wants the band to be signed to themselves. By the end of March the contract is signed. The recording sessions start in July. Four days is thought to be enough, because everybody wants "Bard's Burial" promo tape to appear at the end of the album. At first, X-Treme Records claim "Sinner's Serenade" should come out in September but time passes by and nothing happens....
1997
The boys wait and wait. Meanwhile, it's time for EToS to start rehearsing. The town has given the bands a new rehearsal place. The session members are Petri Sankala (drums) and Antti Kokko ( bass). In midsummer, the band plays their first gig, in their home town at the local midsummer music festival. Finally, the album comes out in September and gets contradictory feedback. However, most of the response is positive.
1998
The name of the next album is going to be called"Vilda Mánnu". The recording sessions are going to last for two weeks now, starting in June. At the time of the recording, the band doesn't know who is going to release the album, if any at all. But EToS still keeps going, and spreads the result all around the world. From the offers, Spinefarm Records is chosen. The album comes out in November, and so does a single from Nightwish "Sacrament of Wilderness", which goes gold soon in Finland!
1999
In January, it's time for the band's first tour. It's a minitour in South and East Finland with Barathrum. Pekka Kokko is the session bassist this time instead of his brother Antti. After the tour, Olli tells Altti and Jarmo that he wants to leave the band to consentrate on his studies. There are two possibilities: Altti and Jarmo go on as a duo or (once again) the line-up will be completed by new members. Olli's farewell gig is in March in Helsinki with Nightwish.
The new line-up is gathered soon and is: Altti Veteläinen (bass/vocals), Jarmo Puolakanaho (guitar), Antti Talala (guitar), Pasi Hiltula (keyboards) ja Petri Sankala (drums). The new line-up starts writing new material immediately. The hectic song-writing and rehearsing goes on throughout the spring and summer. The next album is going to be called Chaotic Beauty. The recording sessions are in November-December, in Tico again. The mixer man will be Mikko "Guru" Karmila", known from co-operation with dozens of Finnish bands.
2000
The third album is releases in Finland in February and gets brilliant reviews all over the world. Soon foreign record companies wake up, too: Drakkar Records licences the album to Germany, Austria and Switzerland, King Records to Japan and later XIII Bis to France. This album also gives the band the first European tour with Nightwish and Sinergy. 9 countries, 26 gigs.
After the tour, in December, Antti Talala is replaced by Antti Kokko, known from his session gigs with the band and also from another local metal band called Kalmah. Also this time the timetable problems are the reason for the line-up change. AT is to do his military service in 2001, so he wouldn't be able to participate on the construction of the next album. In December the new line-up records a couple of songs: a new song called "The Last One For Life" and a cover song from Paradise Lost.
2001
The material for the next album was written in the beginning of the year. The recording sessions are held in Tico-Tico again. They begin in mid-May and end in mid-June, so there's a lot of time to make the album as good as possible. But there's no hurry, the general atmosphere is very relaxed.
The single gets to the official Finnish singles TOP20 chart. The single and the forthcoming album get promoted on a gig in Oulu with Megadeth. The mixing sessions were in August and the album comes out in Finland in October, in Japan in November and in the rest of Europe in early next year.
2002
In March, the band decide to take their first break for a long time. The break is needed to gather inspiration and new, fresh ideas. No information about return yet.
2003
The band decided to break up due to a lack of new material and inspiration at the time. Some of the members joined the band Kalmah. |
