Биография группыKiller was founded in 1980 by Paul "Shorty" Van Camp and Fat Leo (drums) who had just left their previous band Mothers Of Track. Spooky (bass + lead vocals) soon joined their new project. Four months later, a first record called "Ready For Hell" was canned and released by major label WEA. Through this release the power trio Killer underwent high speed evolution and became a well respected major band throughout Europe and beyond. Killer was managed and advised by Alfie Falkenbach, Leo Felsenstein and Stonne Holmgren, the guys who later founded Mausoleum, one of the first independent Heavy Metal labels. Killer was the first Belgian Metal band inspired by the uprising success of NWOBHM bands like Saxon, Iron Maiden, Def Leppard etc. Due to the trio formula, the rough voices, rapid up-tempos and double bass drums, Killer was often compared with Motorhead. An honor indeed…Killer and Motorhead were speedy melodic bands long before Metallica reared its head, so in a way they were innovators in the early eighties. Early 1982, second album "Wall Of Sound" was released through Lark, which meant the international breakthrough of the band. Owing to their very energetic and typical live performances, Killer got the opportunity to tour a lot all around Europe. By that time, many Belgian bands made it to the scene and Mausoleum was up and running. One of the first releases the label made was Killers' third album "Shockwaves", which was a real hit. Excellent reviews from all European countries and even the US, Brazil and Japan ensued. In 1985, the time was high to record a double live album containing all the best Killer hits and even a few new compositions. The album was recorded with Dieter Dierks' (Scorpions) mobile studio in a sold out venue in Antwerp, in front of a crowd going wild. The release of this album would have definitely been the worldwide breakthrough of the band, since expectations and presales ran very high. Unfortunately, the album never saw daylight due to temporary financial problems Mausoleum was facing at that time. Another highlight in Killer's career was the Poland tour in 1986 - it wasn't an easy undertaking at the time for a Metal band to tour behind the Iron Curtain… but venues were sold out. Despite all the attention, the recent non-release of the live album caused the band's first split in 1987. By 1991, Killer had fallen victim to the upcoming Grunge Rock style and the general downfall of melodic Metal and split up for the second time. After the burnout of Grunge and the renaissance of melodic Power Metal, Shorty launched the new edition of Killer in 2002. On the 10th of May that year, Mausoleum's 20th anniversary party took place in a sold old Biebob venue in Vosselaar. On the bill: new editions of Ostrogoth, Crossfire and Killer and the legendary Doro as a special guest (with whom Killer performed 2 songs that night). Other live come-back shows were performed by Killer, namely Graspop 2003 and Kleudde Festival in Belgium, Headbangers Open Air and Keep It True in Germany to name just a few. The band is currently preparing a follow up album to "Broken silence", to be recorded late 2004 and released early 2005. |
