Биография группыThe Early '90s
Dan Martinez and Matt Widener, childhood friends growing up in the mountains of Santa Cruz, CA, decided to form a metal band in 1992 and used psychology
class to dream up the specifics. A name was chosen—Cretin—and the general theme that the band still plies in today was fleshed out, along with a splattery
logo and hopes to be the next death metal champions. The pair hunted high and low for a drummer who knew the finer points of blasting, but after a couple
of years playing with drummers not quite up to speed, they watched Exhumed play live. Col Jones was a combination of Ken Owen, Dave Grave, and Mick Harris,
and Cretin thought about kidnapping him. Dan saw Col at a bus stop, throwing rocks at passing cars, and pulled over to offer him a ride. Kidnapping was not
to happen that day, but a friendship was forged.
The Mid '90s
A while later, in 1994, Matt joined Exhumed as bassist, Dan moved away to Berkeley, and Cretin was put on hiatus. Two years later, Matt—a diehard lover of
early Carcass—grew frustrated, like a petulant child, over Exhumed's non-Carcass influences and quit the band shortly before they were going to kick him
out. Needing dental work and without medical insurance, and with a large supply of comic books, roleplaying games, and a warped sense of the world, Matt
decided to join the Marine Corps Infantry. This was stupid. Again, Cretin was put on hold, this time for four years.
The Late '90s
Col continued to drum for Exhumed and toured the world. Matt went through Security Forces training for anti-terrorism, did a tour in the Fleet, and
travelled the world. Dan went to school and started his career. Cretin was but a memory, except for the occasional lyrics Matt would mail to Dan from
Iceland ("Curdled," "A Fowl Fetish," and "Tazer" were written in this manner).
The Dawn of a New Era!
Matt's time in the Infantry was up in 2000. He returned to the Bay Area and soon after, Cretin was bristling with activity. Col—unable to extensively tour
due to his career—quit Exhumed and joined Cretin. Serious rehearsals began in 2003, and by 2004 the Cretanic Grind Ambush was cut. Relapse signed the band
shortly after, and 2005 was spent writing and rehearsing songs for the album Freakery.
С relapse.com:
Formed in 1992 by guitarist and vocalist, Dan Martinez, and bassist, Matt Widener, Cretin was the Santa Cruz Mountains' answer to the wave of death metal
and grind that was infesting the scene. They spent two years with a multitude of different drummers and ultimately put the band on hold to focus on other
things. Cretin laid dormant while Widener joined gore metal band, Exhumed, in 1994 where he met drummer, Col Jones. In 1996, Widener went insane and left
the band to enlist in the Marines, while Martinez pursued a career in video game production. Like a deformed fetus, pickled in a jar, Cretin
slept—stunted—in the glory era of late '80s and early '90s grindcore. And when it woke, it was angry. Cretin was resurrected in 2003 when Col Jones quit
Exhumed and the three decided that the underground needed a dose of real grind. The trio recorded a demo in 2004, titled Cretanic Grind Ambush, that
Relapse Records released as an Underground Series 7". Relapse Records then signed the band in 2005.
"We're very proud to be part of the Relapse roster," Martinez says, "a label that has represented grind and death metal for over ten years. We hope to
make everyone proud." Widener, who also fronts political grindcore band, Citizen, says, "Relapse is the perfect home for Cretin; really, the only one I can
imagine. I'm glad that they're giving us this chance." Jones, who still drums for thrash metal band, Dekapitator, admits, "I've been with Relapse for
years, and I know Cretin can deliver the goods."
First up for Cretin is a split release with label-mates, Pig Destroyer, due out on Relapse Records sometime later this year. Cretin is also rehearsing
material for their first full-length album, which should be released in late 2005. Senses will be debauched. Eardrums, assaulted. Prepare for the cretanic
grind invasion. |
