Биография группы| Since Jeff Waters left Ottawa and moved West to found Annihilator, subsequently producing two extraordinarily successful albums, Alice In Hell (1989) and Never, Neverland (1990), and embarking on a triumphant march half way round the globe, his band has been among the best and most authentic acts that the international metal scene has to offer. This basic fact never altered, despite a number of line-up changes. During the Nineties, various different vocalists and countless musicians came and went, yet Water's visions of tough power metal did not suffer from any of these changes. 'For some reason, Annihilator were always like a solo project,' he explains, pointing out that he is not only the group's guitarist, composer and arranger, but also increasingly produces their material. 'Of course it wasn't always easy to come to terms with all these new situations, particularly in the early days. There are areas that seem painless to me and that I enjoy a lot. Writing songs and recording the guitar parts is like a holiday for me. Production and mix on the other hand are much more difficult. You have to make so many decisions, bear every minute detail in mind and coordinate everything. Particularly the end mix is always a tough nut to crack, since after months of studio work your ears simply aren't fresh any more.'Yet Waters has once again succeeded in producing an album that leaves nothing to be desired, neither on the compositional nor on the production level. Tracks like the compelling 'Torn', the powerful 'My Precious Lunatic Asylum' and 'Prime Time Killing' or the programmatic 'Fire Power' show Annihilator from their most passionate side. The songs are full of energy and depth, offer a direct and straightforward stance without neglecting the band's familiar love of rhythmic detail. The vague assumption that Waters may currently be undergoing an emotionally difficult phase and consequently has - as was repeatedly hinted in previous interviews - so much raw, aggressive energy, earns a cheerful laugh: 'My private situation is currently extremely content and balanced. I am married, have three wonderful children, the band is going well, I don't know what more I could ask for.' Former Overkill member Joe Comeau has become the most important band member (next to Waters, naturally) since the previous release Carnival Diablos. 'Joe's strongest feature is the fact that his voice always sounds the way we need it to sound at any given time,' Waters grins. 'That's a great advantage because I can put my ideas into practice the way I have them in my head. He's able to copy every previous Annihilator vocalist, myself included, while at the same time bringing in his own style. On top of that he's gone through an amazing development over the past one and a half years. Joe sings better than ever before in his life on Waking The Fury. I'm proud to have him in the band.' Drummer Randy Black, who was first a member between 1993 and 1997, has returned to the Annihilator fold and proves once more that he's a profound and energetic drummer. Curran Murphy joined the band to replace long-term guitarist Dave Scott Davies, who left a few months ago, while the fruitful cooperation with bassist Russ Bergquist continues. With this line up, Annihilator recorded their latest studio album Waking The Fury, which combines an amazing scope of different styles and versatile influences. Acts like Metallica, AC/DC or Megadeth are still a big influence for Waters, just like Iron Maiden, Judas Priest or indeed Slayer. 'Naturally, as a musician you always think that the latest material is the best ever, but I'm pretty confident that I'll still be able to claim in a few years' time that Waking The Fury is the most outstanding Annihilator album in many years. I haven't felt this happy about the production of any of our four previous releases.' After the very successful tour for 'Waking The Fury', Annihilator decided to sign a contract with the German label AFM Records. The first release of their new record label will be the album 'Double Live Annihilation', a double live CD wich shows all the rough- and the tightness of an Annihilator live show. This album includes all Annihilator classics as well as the latest material on two CDs. There will be a limited first edition in a Digi Book format with lots of bonus material and two video clips. |
