Biography of Band

Earth's drone-heavy experimentation is largely the result of its one lasting member, guitarist Dylan Carlson. The band was originally formed in 1990 in Olympia, Washington, by Carlson, Slim Moon (who later founded the Kill Rock Stars label) and Greg Babior. Moon and Babior left soon after, and were replaced by Joe Preston.

Earth played a few live shows and then recorded some material with Mike Lastra. After opening up for L7 in Seattle, the group was approached by Sub Pop Records, which released the recordings in 1991 as Extra-Capsular Extractions. The following year, Carlson and Preston recorded Earth 2 with producer Stewart Hallerman, but Preston left soon after the album's release. Sub Pop was unhappy with Earth's lackadaisical recording tendencies, and the label pulled the plug on 1993 sessions for the third album. Recording resumed the following year with producer Ian Dickson (who would become a permanent member just one year later), engineer Scott Benson and drummer Rick Cambern -- Phase 3 was finally released in April 1995. A live album taken from a Blast First label concert was released the same year as Sunn Amps and Smashed Guitars. Sub Pop surprisingly re-signed Earth for three more albums early in 1996, and Carlson recorded a new album, Pentastar: In the Style of Demons. The album showed a more stabilized band, with the addition of guitarist Shawn McElligot and drummer Mike McDaniels. After a small series of live performances following the release, Earth quietly disbanded with virtually no public acknowledgement of the split. A live album appeared in 2000, followed the next year by a series of demos (one which includes another vocal from the deceased Cobain) which were released with a CD version of the Sunn Amps EP. An Earth video titled A Bureaucratic Desire for Revenge was also available from Sub Pop. ~ John Bush, All Music Guide

At the beginning of 1997 due to increasingly aberrant behavior and other problems suffered by our protagonist, drc, sub-pop and earth part amicably. There is one last burst before the darkness closes in for the next 5 years. drc records 'dissolution ii (miami morning coming down , you fuck ' with Phil Ek at the controls. The song is for the touch records compilation 'scatter' (see discography). This is the last heard from earth for a while. Due to legal and behavioral problems drc relocates to Los Angeles, CA for recuperative and rehabilitative activities. In 2000 drc returns to Seattle, WA to clear up his last remaining legal problems. In 2001 drc renews his acquaintance with Adrienne Davies. Intense woodshedding begins. earth is contacted by Mike Quinn to re-release the 1995 live record 'sunn amps and smashed guitars' (originally on Blast First). Unreleased material from the first recording sessions is added to the live material and it becomes the first release for No Quarter. In September of 2002 earth embarks on a week long tour of the east coast. earth performs as a drums and guitar duo for the first time. Adrienne Davies becomes earth's first full-time drummer and the 14th member of earth. earth unveils it's new cleaner, sparser, and more improvisational style. In March of 2003 earth headlines a Southern Lord showcase at the SxSW festival in Austin, TX. earth is approached by future felon Josh Hunt about re-issuing 1992's 'earth 2'. The idea is to re-issue it on vinyl(triple-LP). He also claims to be starting a label and wants to put out records by other groups as well as earth. A European tour is booked for November 2003 with K.K.Null and Noel Akchote. When earth arrives in London for the first show (with Whitehouse and Russell Haswell), there is a huge pile of merchandise ( LP's, 12" singles and t-shirts. So begins 12 shows in 14 days. Prutpuss (the publisher of the Rotkop 'zine) is our driver and our favorite European. At the end of the tour Josh Hunt absconds with the money generated by the merchandise (unknown by earth who are in the air on their way back home) and fails to pay anyone involved with supplying earth with equipment and transport, while also abandoning said merchandise in Paris. Josh Hunt is promptly arrested on federal charges of wire fraud and appears to be (hopefully) no longer among us or near to earth. earth is devastated and in shock. Mike Quinn's No Quarter records is in the process of putting together an earth re-mix record with the likes of mogwai, russell haswell, sunn, jim o'rourke, Justin broedrick, autechre, and others reworking there favorite earth songs. earth will be transferring tracks to digital formats for these artists in May.

Earth is continuing to work on new material and is looking forward to any opportunities for performing live locally , nationally, or internationally. earth is actively looking for funding for recording a new studio recording and welcomes any offers. earth is also seeking ethical management. earth does not plan to stop anytime soon and will update this bio periodically as new information presents itself.
